Supporting Future Educators and Athletes – Now & Later – Through the Legacy Challenge

Jim and Katie Reed have been deeply involved with UT San Antonio, serving on the UT San Antonio Development Board since 1974 and contributing philanthropically in multiple areas. Over the years they have seen UT San Antonio’s importance in helping San Antonio and Texas succeed and understand how community support positively impacts the university’s trajectory. As a result, they recently named UT San Antonio as a beneficiary of their retirement funds, maximizing their commitment through bonus grants from the Legacy Challenge.

“We’ve watched UT San Antonio grow and grow,” said Jim, who now chairs the UT San Antonio Development Board. “We feel that the education UT San Antonio provides on a broad base is the backbone of the city. It’s the city’s university—if UT San Antonio succeeds then the city will succeed.”

Katie, a former teacher and Northside Independent School District Board member, has long recognized the need for more educators in San Antonio. Alongside Jim, she created the Katie N. Reed Endowed Scholarship to support students in UT San Antonio’s College of Education and Human Development. As a first-generation college graduate, Katie is especially passionate about helping first-generation students on their educational journeys.

“I personally understand the need in this community to support first-generation students getting through school,” Katie explained. “UT San Antonio does such a great job with these students, and for me, it was the perfect fit.”

As former athletes themselves, Jim and Katie also recognize the importance of athletics to UT San Antonio’s reputation. To further support the university, they contribute to Roadrunner Athletics, helping cover the academic expenses of student-athletes.

Thanks to the Legacy Challenge, the Reeds’ gifts were immediately matched, amplifying their impact. Through their ongoing support, Jim and Katie are making a significant difference for UT San Antonio students today, while ensuring a lasting impact for future generations.
