Profiles of Impact
Longtime supporters of UTSA, Jim and Katie Reed may not have been Roadrunners themselves, but both consider the university to be their adopted alma maters. They believe the success of UTSA is key to the success of San Antonio. Holding the university in such high regard, the pair recently participated in the Legacy Challenge, making generous contributions to both the College of Education and Human Development and Roadrunner Athletics.
As a former teacher and member of the Northside Independent School District Board, Katie recognized a great need for educators in San Antonio and, with Jim, created the Katie N. Reed Endowed Scholarship for students in COEHD. As a first-generation American herself, it was also important for her to support first-gen students with her gift.
“I personally understand the need in this community for those who are first generation, who need help getting through school. UTSA does such a great job in supporting these students and for me it was the perfect fit,” she said.
Having been involved with the university as members of the Development Board since 1974, Jim and Katie have also seen UTSA’s athletics department grow leaps and bounds over the last several decades. Both former athletes themselves and knowing how important athletics is to the reputation of the university, they also give back to Roadrunner Athletics to support student athletes’ academic expenses.
“We’re proud of what’s going on at UTSA and how it is growing. The coaches and the athletics directors that have been hired have really done a fantastic job with our athletes. So we both have to say, bird’s up!” expressed Katie.
As part of the Legacy Challenge, both of their gifts will be matched by UTSA, creating a lasting legacy and immediate impact on the university’ high-achieving students.
We are committed to helping friends and supporters of The University of Texas at San Antonio engage with the university in ways that will create a bold future for our students, faculty, and staff. Whatever your interest at UTSA, we can help you make a lasting impact on Roadrunner Nation.
