Former Student-Athlete Plans for Future Roadrunners’ Success

Rhonda Kay Hoffman ’87, the second woman to receive a full-ride athletics scholarship to The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), deeply values the high-quality education and support she received at the university. A San Antonio native, her journey as a student-athlete in her hometown shaped her perspective on the importance of community. Rhonda recently decided to include UTSA in her estate plans, acknowledging the influential role the university played in her personal and professional growth.

Rhonda took full advantage of the opportunity to join the UTSA women’s basketball team, where she made significant contributions over her four-year journey. She set multiple school records, including the highest free throw percentage in a season. To this day, she ranks in the top five for both steals and assists. Alongside her success on the basketball court, Rhonda earned a degree in criminal justice and later returned to UTSA to earn her teaching certification, which led to a fulfilling career as a middle school teacher.

Rhonda understands the significance of a college education and the pivotal role that team sports play in an individual’s career and lifelong development. By including a gift in her will to support women’s basketball, she hopes that future generations of student-athletes continue to grow and succeed as teammates and as individuals – on the court, in the classroom, and beyond.

“To the current athletes at UTSA I want to emphasize that this is a very special time in your lives,” shared Rhonda. “Be sure to enjoy playing, supporting each other, and learning together.”

Rhonda’s commitment to giving back highlights the power of collective contributions. She believes that gifts of any size can have a lasting impact on the next generation.

“You don’t need vast wealth to make a difference through giving. I give what I can,” expressed Rhonda. “Every small gift, over time, can make a lasting impact.”
