Profiles of Impact

Yvonne ’85 and Gary ’86 Fernandez

A Planned Investment in the Next Generation

Yvonne Fernandez ’85 and her husband, Gary Fernandez ’86, have been key contributors to the growth and success of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and its students for nearly 30 years. As accomplished alumni, they have supported multiple areas within the university, including alumni programs, the Carlos Alvarez College of Business, and Roadrunner Athletics. In June 2019, they found a simple way to ensure their support endures by naming UTSA as a beneficiary in their will, a gesture that underscores their commitment to the university’s future beyond their lifetimes.

“Yvonne and I want to ensure that UTSA students receive the same strong foundation we were given. We hope our support will enrich the lives of future students and give them the opportunity to pursue a high-quality education at a top-tier university,” said Gary. “Though we may not directly witness the results of our contributions, knowing we’ve sown seeds for future generations is deeply rewarding.”

Yvonne and Gary have both made a significant impact at UTSA and in the wider community. Yvonne’s leadership roles, including Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations at Security Service Federal Credit Union, Past President of the UTSA Alumni Association, and her board memberships across various UTSA advisory councils, highlight a career characterized by professional excellence and community engagement. Gary is an active member of the UTSA Alumni Association and has dedicated his expertise as a Systems Analyst to ensure their contributions effectively support the university’s growth and success.

Having observed the university’s evolution firsthand, Yvonne champions giving back, believing that it not only benefits UTSA but also strengthens the broader community.

“As alumni, witnessing UTSA’s transformation has been remarkable. Over the last three decades, we’ve seen tremendous progress–from increased student engagement to the expansion of UTSA’s presence across the city,” shared Yvonne. “I want others to understand that their support contributes to something that benefits not only UTSA, but the entire city of San Antonio. It has been wonderful to realize that with a simple planned gift, we can help continue this progress beyond our years.”

As UTSA continues to evolve, the Fernandezes hope their support will serve as a testament to the power of giving back and paying it forward–a reminder that the foundations laid today pave the way for the leaders of tomorrow.
