Profiles of Impact
Carlos Alvarez College of Business alumnus, Stewart Wedge ‘07, has a strong commitment to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). After graduating with the support of an academic scholarship during his undergraduate years, Stewart established himself in real estate development, a field in which he has found both success and a sense of community. Grateful for the support he received as a student, Stewart recently established The Charles and Deborah Wedge Endowed Scholarship for students pursuing their degrees in the Alvarez College of Business, in honor of his parents.
As an undergraduate studying finance and accounting, Stewart was deeply influenced by the mentorship of his professors and the rich learning opportunities afforded him, including MBA-level accounting classes and a study abroad experience in New Zealand—his first experience traveling outside the country.
“I had an incredible experience as a Roadrunner and wanted to pay it forward. I thought it was also a wonderful opportunity to honor my parents,” said Stewart. “My father was a CPA and loved working for nonprofits. It was always important to both of my parents to give back, and I wanted to provide them the opportunity to mirror their values and goals by giving back to students who will become our future business leaders.”
In December 2023, Stewart decided to utilize his appreciated stock to create the endowment, enabling it to grow over time while also funding an annual scholarship for immediate impact. The first scholarship was awarded to a deserving student from the Alvarez College of Business in August 2024.
“Donating stock to UTSA was incredibly easy and streamlined,” Stewart said. “I realized it was better to donate directly rather than sell and incur capital gains. It not only provides a great tax deduction but also supports the success of students.”
Charlie and Deborah Wedge, Stewart’s parents, see the endowed scholarship as a chance to extend educational opportunities to first-generation students in San Antonio, a community with a significant portion of such students.
“All our lives, we’ve been committed to education. We look forward to giving first-generation students an opportunity they might not otherwise have,” said Charlie. “With need being an important factor in awarding this scholarship, we primarily hope to help make life better for others. It’s less about us, and more about the students,” added Deborah.
Donating appreciated assets such as stock is one of the smartest ways to give. Stewart and his family are not only celebrating their values but are also ensuring that future generations of Roadrunners will have the support they need to thrive in their educational and professional endeavors.
We are committed to helping friends and supporters of The University of Texas at San Antonio engage with the university in ways that will create a bold future for our students, faculty, and staff. Whatever your interest at UTSA, we can help you make a lasting impact on Roadrunner Nation.
